Medical Conditions Qualifying for SSDI

The Social Security Administration (SSA) keeps a list of conditions which, once the progress to a certain severity, become classified as disabilities. These are called "listed impairments," and they include such things as lung disease, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy and many other conditions.

It is important to realize that an impairment does not need to be listed in order for an applicant to qualify for SSD or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. There are a variety of other physical conditions and mental conditions that can form the foundation of a disability claim. These include:

  • Depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder
  • Spinal injuries and back and neck pain
  • Joint pain/arthritis/orthopedic injuries
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Psoriasis
  • Chronic obstructive lung disease/asthma
  • Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and Lyme disease
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Multiple sclerosis

This list is by no means complete. Remember that the basic requirement to qualify for SSD is to be suffering from a disabling condition that prevents the applicant from working full time. If that is your circumstance, it is likely that you qualify.
